As someone who has struggled with mental health for a long time, I have a series of different conditions but I am ok and I’m still here smiling today, it’s not all that bad. Due to me having had these experiences, I’ve decided to make something good of them and not let them bring me down. If I can help other people out there realise it’s not too bad then I have succeeded.

Mental health problems can creep up on you when you least expect it and if you’re not looking after yourself properly, that’s more likely to happen. There are certain behaviours and stress triggers that make you far more likely to experience mental health problems in the future. The key to maintaining a healthy body and mind is avoiding these bad habits that damage your mental wellbeing. So here goes nothing, 4 bad habits that can affect you and make you feel worse at certain times.

Excessive Spending

One of the biggest causes of stress and anxiety is money worries. When you’ve got debts piling up and bills coming in, you’ll constantly be worrying about it and all of that stress can lead to far worse problems. If you’re already in debt, you need to get yourself out of it as soon as possible. All of those interest payments are constantly making it harder to get out of that hole so you should try to take out a loan and consolidate those payments into one single one that’s easier to manage. Once you’ve combined all of your debts into one payment, you can start budgeting to pay it off. Once your finances are in order again, you’ll find that you’re far less stressed. I, myself have been here and it’s not nice so just be sensible and I assure you will be ok.

Too Much Social Media

The online world is a very toxic environment and if you’re spending too much time there, it can lead to a lot of negative feelings. When people are on social media they have a tendency to compare themselves to all of the other people posting on there. Everybody crafts a perfect life on social media so it can easily leave you feeling as though you aren’t doing as well as everybody else. If you’re constantly looking at social media, you’ll end up feeling bad about yourself. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it at all but you should limit your time and when you’re on there, remember that people are only showing you the best parts of their lives.

Lack Of Exercise

This is probably one of the hardest ones for me when I’m feeling down. There is nothing worse than feeling depressed and not wanting to move but knowing you have to. A lot of mental health professionals will tell you that one of the most important things you should do to keep your mind healthy is exercise regularly. Exercising is a great stress reducer and it releases endorphins which boost your mood. It’ll also give you a lot more energy which really helps with motivation. You don’t need to start an excessive gym routine or anything but going for a run every few days or even doing exercise videos in the living room will really help to boost your mood.

Bad Sleep

So many people these days just aren’t getting enough sleep and it has so many negative effects on you. It can impact your immune system and make you more susceptible to all sorts of diseases as well as having a serious negative effect on your mental wellbeing. If you’re constantly tired it will sap motivation and you can easily get into a rut. Serious lack of sleep has also been linked to depression and anxiety disorders so it’s vital that you’re getting at least 7 hours of good quality sleep every night.  

Cutting out these bad habits will keep your mind in much better shape. I can promise you that.

    Money worries is so bad for me. Whenever im sad or feeling a bit down i will spend my money like its an unlimited supply and now im kind of broke! It’s so bad because at the time, i feel fulfilled by spending by then when ive spent all my money, it contributes to my mental health not being the strongest!

    You have nicely outlined the triggers for mental health issues. Doing meditation and exercise is the key to self-control and overcome the aforesaid triggers

    Wow! I’ve never struggled with mental illness myself but I have a good friend that does, and reading this has really helped me understand what’s going on in her head, thank you for sharing such a personal side x

    Some great tips here, I totally agree. Alongside exercise, I personally find that healthy (or healthier) eating helps too. I find that if I eat a lot of junk food, my mindset can really be affected!
